The Role Of The Art Director Film Studies Essay
The Role Of The Art Director Film Studies Essay A firm and imagined set helps to bring forth a good visual and a better output. This is to the desire of the person who is putting up a set and what does it mean and how does it help him as many cannot be done without the help of sets. When coming to how I chose this topic is simple, everyone gets a shiver when we see some of the greatest movies of all times and the sets which they use in those are the ones which brings the environment and finish to the film as and when there are no sets and we want a finish a set is the most competent one and gives life to the stars surroundings and the entire output. This is why I had chose my topic as a cinema set as these have been around for most of a century and continuous and keeps growing vast in size and importance and with at most popularity where we can have a set of cave than going and finding a real one. This is a topic which has inspired me to create my own set for the short film I have shot and the set is the most important aspect of t he whole film as it deals with various periods of the cine time and how it changes due to the ongoing changes in time and people. The set has been made in a manner to resemble an old street feel in of the late 50s and how it went about the later decades and it has changed according to cinema and personnel. Some when seen has a spark and we would like to take another look at it cause of its structure and the glow its gives out and feel it resembles to be. This is the main aspect of the set as it creates a whole new being to the stage where the actors perform and it helps to bring out the best in them by giving out a specialness in the whole frame and that to it can be done only when the set is put with the likeness of how it should look or the way it has been imagined for the right kind of story and how do we get the best of it and to make sure it has been put up well and to be in frame in the right kind and not to be undefined as a not good. This is all into the art of a set how it is imagined and put up for the right kind of shoot and important it suits all aspects from dressing to the smallest detail as without a set there is no background and this takes us to the very beginning to show a set is important than all. ART DIRECTORS and their WORK: When we go to see a film to the theater, are we aware of the fact and truth that every single aspect of the set has been carefully designed by an art director and his conceptions. They are the ones that develop concepts and review the entire material that appears in films and theaters, and they are the ones who ultimately decide how to present the performance, so it is awe/eye-catching, gracefully appealing and captivating to all the audiences present.à The art directors happen to organize and direct the most technical and artistic part of aspects of motion pictures, live stage productions and day to day television shows by designing proper sets, matching costumes, correct furnishings and props to create an accurate portrayals and resemblance of various time periods and decade settings. These art directors are the ones responsible for the overall look and proper presentation of films, live television shows and live stage productions. They do have a very strong sense of vision and e nduring style. However as to them their jobs can vary much greatly depending on the type of medium they work with.à An art directors first and foremost job is to read the script or screenplay and to know on what period it is. Once they get to know the proper material, then they begin to do extended research about the time period in which a live stage play or film is set. If the set time period is of the present day, then their work is not too difficult and they can improvise on it. But however if a film is set in Queen Elizabethan times and Mughals period, the art director must go through and read history books about the past time period, by most possibly visit the various museums and art galleries on them to learn about the dress fashions, furniture and architecture of the time period. This is a bit very important because a film about the Queen Elizabethan period must be sort of accurate, to believable and have the proper costumes, props and other set design elements. If the art director is not careful and an extra artist is wearing an outfit/costume from a different period, then the audiences an d film critics could criticize the film for not being properly researched and looked upon. And finally, the art director also has to oversee the costume and dress design, props and setting designs to make sure that they portray the proper time period realistically and accordingly. à The art directors have to do everything behind the scenes and they consult with the film directors, film producers and production managers about all aspects of a work they have to do and how it has to be done. They must also make sure that they meaning the cost is to staying within of the film companys budget when purchasing props, proper set designs and other special effects items which have been asked for. Art directors bring the imagined stories to life existence through the visual components and art work. They work with the films technical directors and other crew members to plan films camera angles and set lighting to start with their work.à In the films, due to the explosion and outbreak of animation, vfx and technological special effects in many types of fantasy and adventure kind of genres, art directors are hired to supervise the animators, clay animation designers and various makeup artists. Now art directors work closely with crew members not only of their team but of others, giving advice and instructions. In each and every scene, art directors must work with the film director to plan the shots framing and frame, composition of the frame and camera involvement and movement. These kind of process takes a very long and painful time and makes movie-making process seem less glamorous than the other professions.à In the theaters, art directors also prepare various plays for production. They do have to arrange all the details coming on the stage as per settings and to all other stage effects. Art directors then consult with set designers, various props artists, their costume designers, dance choreographers and stagehand managers in the number of weeks before the production stage comes to in order to make sure that everyone is working and proceeding towards the play directors vision and proper interpretation of the play. During the rehearsals, art managing directors work very closely with people behind the screen labors to ensure a proper output. Every little or small detail is to be of a large detail in the art directors eyes and point of view. What Does an Art Director Do? An art director is someone who traditionally undertakes the direction of the production designer, and surrounds all the altering of the setting and missing settings of the scene. This means that they only design and then alter the set so that it will and would appear as how the director intends in their imagined vision. They will begin by a basic meeting with the director and getting a very clear idea of what they want and how they want everything to look like. After that and all the art director will add many creative designs and basic sketches as to how the set will be dressed, finished and altered so that the appearance fits within the directorial vision of the director. All things in this stage will be the main responsibility of the art director has to take every small change to account. Visit Locations: The very first thing that a successful and most wanted art director must do is to go to theà shooting locationà and see what they are dealing with and how. If the film director wants the inside of a bedroom to look like an old brick alley there may be no option for the art director but to create a new one. They will have consider to see how they can take the given amount of location and alter it in a better way that will continue directorial vision of the director. He has to take a look at the space, available electrical supply, and all objects in the general area aspects. Production Stills: Production stills are going to be the other most important function of the art director in his process. What this happens to mean is that the art director is going to be taking pictures throughout the production time, that is of the set and actors and the crew doing their work and its process. These production stills end up filling a few functions for the director. First, they document the art production as it is happening for their company books and other film documents. These can be used to get an extra funding, that is especially if you create anà internalHYPERLINK http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/video/articles/28851.aspx presence in the set and can use some more. Second, the pictures of the lead cast can be used for post promotional purposes that later on which helps in good manner. Third, these photos are very crucial since they will not only indicate exactly where all the props and set dressings and were in every take or shot so they can be moved back to their original an d proper location within the story space allotted for them. VARIOUS FIELDS OF AN ART DIRECTOR: An art director is in the most hierarchical structure of a film art department works directly only below the production designer and production manager, and above the set designers and set decorators. A total of large part of their duties that include the administrative aspects of the art department and management of their sets. They are responsible for properly assigning tasks to their personnel, and keeping track of the whole art department budget and scheduling of work completion, as well as overall quality control of the setting and props.Various artists may create or develop some specific parts of an art piece or scene; but a sole part of art director unifies the vision. In particular, that the art director is in charge of the overall visual and set appearance and how ità communicates visually in the output, stimulating moods, contrasts color features, and psychologically appealing to a target audience. The art director makes his decisions about the visual elements used, on wh at artisticà styleà to use, andà how and when to use motion. It is one of the most and very difficult problems that all art directors face is to translate the desired moods, new messages, new concepts, and the underdeveloped ideas into imagery. During the brainstorming and thinking process, art directors, coworkers, and the clients are engaged in imagining what the finished piece or scene might look like and their desire. At most times, an art director is the ultimate responsible for all solidifying the vision of the collective imagination while resolving conflicting agendas, concepts and inconsistencies between the various and all individual inputs and outputs. IN ADVERTISING: Though despite the title, anà advertisingà type of art director isnt necessarily the one head of an art department. In modern advertising forums practice, an art director is who typically works in tandem with aà copywriter and gives the output. The team usually and mostly works together to devise an overall concept that is also known as the big idea for the ad, commercial, magazine, mailer, brochure, or other advertisement forums. The copywriter is the one responsible for the textual and script content, the art director is for the visual aspects. But the A.D. may or can come up with the headline or other copy of the output, and the copywriter can or may suggest a visual or the aesthetic or desired approach on his touch. Each person usually may welcomes suggestions and other constructive criticism from the others. Ideally these words and visual should not or may not parrot each other; each should and can enhance or enlarge the others meaning and aspect and its main effect. Art directors and copywriter teams working methods vary, but that the copywriter is more involved in many processes of gathering all information from the client or account executive and other personnel, while the art director, who is usually less skilled according to the ads, remains more involved through proper production period. At the most extreme, a writer is what might simply submit a hand-written text copy and ask strategic instructors to the art director to complete, who then contributes the visual aspects of the final text output. If this part of irony is true, the only immortal success of this approach may be due in part been as widely held the greatest and best advertising print ever of an art director who ever lived. The ability to make, formulate and communicate, and syllabify the message, to rather than simply stylize it with colors, is one of the best qualities that distinguishes an expert art director from a graphic designer. These two professions always overlap in what is known asà communication design in the one media, with individuals those fulfilling both roles at the same time or but in alternating between roles. Although to a good art director that which is expected is to haveà a graphic designà state to a judgment and least technical knowledge of the production, it can or may not be necessary for an art director toà handle a renderà or even be able to draw as of now that which is virtually all but the most preliminary work is done on computer. Except in the smaller of organizations, the art director and copywriter team is to be overseen by aà creative director,à a senior media creative, a chief creative director. In such a large organization, an art director may only over see other art directors and that a team of juniorà level designers,à level image developersà and/orà production level artists, and their coordinates with a separate form of production department. In these smaller organizations, the art director may fill all these roles completing all including oversight of printing and other production quality works. IN FILM: In films an art director is in theà hierarchicalà structure of a proper film art department, who works directly below only of theà production designer, that is in collaboration with the set decorator, and above theà set designer available. A very large part of their duties includes the administrative aspects of theà art department and output. They are mainly responsible for assigning all tasks toà personnel, keeping all track of the art departments budget and scheduling of process and outputs, as well as overall quality control as per time. They are often also a proper liaison to other departments; especially theà construction department as they are the ones who help in putting up the sets. In the past, the art directors title was used to denote as the head of the art department and hence theà Academy Award for Best Art Direction. Example :On the movie Gone with the Wind they had such a significant role in the look of the film, that the title of Art Director was not s ufficient for the works and process, and so the title of Production Designer came up being. The title has become more and very common, and now the Production Designer is commonly used as the head of the Art Department, although this title actually and only implies control overall and every visual aspect of a film, including costumes and props. IN PUBLISHING: Art directors in publishingà typically work with the publicationsà editors and top personnel. Together all they work on a proper concept for each section and pages of the publication. Individually only the art director is mostly responsible for all the visual look and feel of the publication or magazine, and the editor has the ultimate responsibility for the publications verbal and textual content.

An analysis of The Flea written by John Donne Essay
The flea, written by John Donne is another poem containing love, sex and religion. One of John Donneââ¬â¢s characteristics is to always include these three main subjects in his poems. The Flea represents lust, but a lust with respect for women. The subject of this poem is about a couple of lovers lying in bed. He wants to take her virginity away from her. In essence, the meaning of this quote: ââ¬Å"And in this flea our two bloods mingled beâ⬠means that the flea has bitten both lovers and that their blood is mingled in the flea. The act of having sexual intercourse is considered to be an exchange of bodily fluids, not necessarily being all about love and lust. The lover also feels some kind of jealousy because the flea has already mingled with her before their marriage, and he has not, or in the poem referred to as to befroe ââ¬Å"wooâ⬠. The vocabulary used in this poem is quite old, I would say it dates back to the 17th century, it does not contain a lot of complicated words, but the old English used made it necessary to translate the poem in a more contemporary language. Imagery is widely present. ââ¬Å"two blood mingled beâ⬠is very clear link to exchanging bodily fluids, the equivalent of having sexual intercourse. Another clear link to the sexual side is ââ¬Å"And pamperââ¬â¢d swells with one blood made of twoâ⬠The flea symbolizes a different thing every stanza. In the first stanza, the flea represent the two lovers united together in the flea, ââ¬Å"This flea, you and Iâ⬠is a metaphor simply stating what the greatest part of the poem is about. The flea contains both their blood, and in it, they are together. Then in the second stanza, the flea is not simply them being together, but it means the whole world to them. In the third and last stanza however the fleaââ¬â¢s symbol is that of sin and suddenly gets demoted to simply being a flea again. ââ¬Å"And cloisterââ¬â¢d in these living walls of jetâ⬠immediately cretes an image of a small, dark place, most probably in this case being the inside of the flea. There is quite a lot of repetition in this poem, especially ââ¬Å"Mark but this flea, and mark in thisâ⬠creates an emphasizing effect and attempts to get the readers attention on the flea. The structure is mostly consistent throughout the whole poem, except for the last 3 lines. The poem is a closed-form poem, and the rhyming pattern is AABBCCDDD. â⬠This, is, thee, beâ⬠in the first stanza clearly shows this rhyming pattern is present in the poem. The effect of this rhythm is that makes it easier to remember this poem, as it in some way sounds like a song when the rhythm is followed. The tone in this poem is one of deep intimacy and curiosity, especially in the first stanza; the tone is one of curiosity. He is jealous of the flea that already has mingled their ââ¬Å"bloodsâ⬠. ââ¬Å"And this, alas! Is more than we would do.â⬠Suggests that the lover finds it a pity that they did not have intercourse yet, but it doesnââ¬â¢t bring him down so to speak. In the second stanza however, the tone changes from curiosity to pity for the flea and is more impassionate, as in the second flea it becomes clear that the woman wants to kill the flea because it has her blood already. The lover presents an argument and tries to seduce her into not killing the flea seeing that she would committing 3 sins as she would be killing ââ¬Å"three sins in killing threeâ⬠the flea, the lover, and herself. So it also carries some sadness with it. In the third and last stanza the tone is set to a more playful mood again. Sinfulness in this poem is clearly present. To stress the fleaââ¬â¢s innocence, ââ¬Å"Wherein could this flea guilty be?â⬠It changes the image of the flea to that of just an insect again, that is not smart enough to realize what it has done. Overall, the tone is a lot like the process of sexual intercourse. It has the foreplay, and then it builds up to the climax and finally relaxes again. The first stanza represents the foreplay, a small thing such as the flea sucking the blood of both, with a sexual connotation ââ¬Å"it suckââ¬â¢d me first, and now sucks theeâ⬠is a playful connotation of for example intimate kisses. Then it builds up in intensity as the man attempts to persuade her but fails at protecting the innocent fleaââ¬â¢s life; finally the woman kills it, which would be the climax. The final stanza is simply reflecting upon what just happened and the pace slows down again, the r elaxation. To conclude this essay, I believe this poem is about two people who deeply love each other and the lover tries to persuade the woman into losing her virginity to him. This poem is about the intimate relationship, love, and sex and religion. Religion as in the marriage bed and marriage temple and not having sex before ââ¬Å"wooâ⬠. It refers to human nature as all of us have the same desire and feelings in us. Most of us will find their true love at some point and experience the mingling of their blood. Not necessarily of course, but I believe that for most of us this is true.

The Tragic Hero Of Hamlet By William Shakespeare - 1402 Words
Philosopher Aristotle said ââ¬Å"the change of fortune presented must not be the spectacle of a virtuous man brought from prosperity to adversity. From Aristotleââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Poetics,â⬠he suggested that a hero must evoke in the audience a sense of fear and pity. In many ways, Hamlet is the quintessential tragic hero. Like the classical tragic hero, Hamlet begins with the noblest motivations, to punish his fatherââ¬â¢s murderer, but he does not survive to see the full outcome of his actions. Hamletââ¬â¢s tragic flaw as well as his extensive knowledge, causes him to think through everything before acting, effectively stopping him from being decisive, and bringing about his necessary tragic ending. Hamletââ¬â¢s deep connection with knowledge causes him to base his perceptions of reality on his interpretation and understanding of the world, and he allows himself to become obsessed with the meaning of his life and revenge of his fatherââ¬â¢s death. By contemplating death, ruining his love of Ophelia, and his obsession with exposing Claudius, Hamletââ¬â¢s cloudy judgment and inability to take decisive action characterizes him as a tragic hero. Shakespeare reveals Hamletââ¬â¢s tragic flaw when Hamlet begins to question his role in life, in the famous ââ¬Å"to be or not to beâ⬠soliloquy. Nonetheless, Hamlet cannot kill himself because of his tragic flaw within the depths of his mind and his obsession with revenge against Claudius. We will write a custom essay sample on With whom does responsibility for the Holocaust ultimately lie? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Hitler did as early as 1935 make his feelings about the Jewish race clear by making his anti-Semitism public policy in the Nuremburg Race laws. But aside from in ââ¬Å"Mein Kampfâ⬠, Hitler made little indication until the last minute that he had given approval for the extermination program, ( even Mein Kampf is not that reliable, because it was written by a young man imprisoned for his beliefs, and he was bound to exaggerate to get his message across and to raise sales profits ). He seems to have kept out of the actual planning and implementation of the killing process, leaving that in the more than capable hands of the Nazi officials, including Himmler, Frank and Heydrich. Many of the ideas such as Ghettos and mass transportation were left under their control, for them to act on their own innitiative. Although he was seen by the public as heavily involved with politics and decision making for Germany, it has since been revealed that Hitler spent a large part of his day relaxing at home, and was often happy to sign papers after only a brief glance. After the virulence shown in ââ¬Å"Operation Barbarossaâ⬠towards the Russian Jews, Hitler in speeches tried to convince the public that a good solution had been found to ââ¬Ëthe jewish problemââ¬â¢ and should be continued throughout the rest of Europe, hiding the intensity of the mass genocide going on in the country next door to them. He also reffered to the transits as ââ¬Ëresettlementsââ¬â¢ for ââ¬Å"appropriate labour dutiesâ⬠, which made the program seem more civilised. Amongst the Nazi leaders, talk was rarely directly about the actual business of the ââ¬Å"final solutionâ⬠agenda, reffering as Hitler did to program as of ââ¬Å"legalised removalâ⬠and ââ¬Å"resettlementâ⬠. But it was reported at the trial of Eichmann in 1960 that within private meetings the ââ¬Å"talk was of killing, elimination and liquidationâ⬠. Obviously the top officials like Himmler and Heydrich didnââ¬â¢t want to give the public the impression that they were intently malicious, but it is clear that they did not have reservations about ordering the police, Wehrmacht and S. S. to carry out there instructions. Himmler was able to directly comit the 800 000 strong S. S. to the tasks of operating the death camps, and so needed no other authority. Most of them believed that they were just doing their duty for Germany and could contently do their tasks without moral objections. Other leaders like Goebbels were passionately anti-semitic and outright about it, but Goebbels with all of his propaganda experience probably conveyed it tactfully. At the Nuremburg trials, many leaders tried to claim ignorance of the program however preposterous that may seem after looking at the evidence, but there is little actual proof of their actions, so there is not much firm indication to support the claims of their responsibility. The earlier T-4 ( euthanasia program ) had been in effect a development program for the search for efficient means of large and refined killings. Some officials such as Bouhler and Brack had been largely involved with T-4 and were able to pass on their extensive knowledge, and implement it in death camps like Treblinka and Belzec. T-4 also demonstrated that mass killings could be carried out by ordinary individuals without hesitation. Having said this, it would be eminently hard to prove that anyone involved with T-4 could have known that their methods would be used to wipeout a race, a process significantly larger and more important (to them) than what they were originally doing. The German army and police were undoubtedly involved to some extent in the program because of the logistics of the operation, but it would be unfair to try to blame them entirely for what they were doing. Some tried to keep a clear conscience by thinking of their victims as ââ¬Å"not men but monkeys in human formâ⬠. But on the whole they were just following their orders and doing their jobs. A lot of the German people had, before Hitler came to power in 1933, been Anti-Semitic in varying degrees. Hitler only had to play on their feelings, making his policies reflect what the people wanted to hear. High ranking people, in the civil service, Army and churches, were among the Anti-Semitic thinkers. Prostestants in Germany had for a long time been Anti-Semitic since the time of Martin Luther and the Reformation in Europe. Some policies were frowned upon and met limited opposition, the Catholic church against euthanasia for example, but the actual ââ¬ËHolocaustââ¬â¢ was affected very little by public protest. The public were often made aware of what was happening to the Jews by allied radio broadcasts, leaflet drops and stories brought home by soldiers who had been on the Russian front. But to many these were just rumours and not taken seriously. Everyone involved with the holocaust was each partly to blame. Hitler was the driving force behind most Nazi policies, but not many were his own. He was blamed by the German people, to forget their own responsibility. Himmler and Heydrich came up with and implemented many plans themselves, and were valuable to Hitler to keep his regime going. There was not enough opposition to earlier programs such as T-4 to stem the violence then, and it spiralled out of control. General public opinion, and even whole national organisations opinions, were too well established in their dislike of Jews to be changed even by mass violence. If it had been changed against Hitlerââ¬â¢s regime, there would not have been sufficient power to do what the regime achieved. Meaning of Work free essay sample
Doing ââ¬Å"work goodâ⬠means being an outstanding employee and going above and beyond to do your job. The problem is that sometimes the two contradict each other. This seems to be the underlying issue in Lynda Workmanââ¬â¢s passage, ââ¬Å"The Experience of Policy,â⬠where she is torn between following the policy of her job and doing what she knows in her heart is right. In Barbara Garsonââ¬â¢s passage, ââ¬Å"McDonalds-We Do It All for You,â⬠she interviews McDonalds employees to get insight on what itââ¬â¢s like to work at McDonalds and how it feels to know that in their eyes: no matter who you are, you are replaceable. These two passages are very similar to each other. McDonalds doesnââ¬â¢t want their employees to think, only to follow the procedures, just as Workman is forced to follow policy, not to do what she knows is right. I am fortunate to have had the same job at a family restaurant called Bravo Cafe for the past 3 years. However, Iââ¬â¢ve also had experiences working at other jobs over the years. I have been in almost the same situations as these McDonalds employees and Workman and it was because of this I realized what doing ââ¬Å"good workâ⬠and doing ââ¬Å"work goodâ⬠means to me. In March of 2011 I became an employee of Sonic Drive-In. Over the course of the 5 months I worked there I never liked it. This was the first job I had ever worked besides Bravo. Even though I loved my job there I was dying to do something different. At first it was really tough being the ââ¬Å"new personâ⬠again, but I figured that once I got everything down I would be treated with more respect. However, I quickly learned that this wasnââ¬â¢t the case. My managers were strictly business, and like McDonalds, they made it clear that if you ever chose to quit you could easily be replaced. I hated being treated this way and as time went on I became more and more careless about my performance as an employee at Sonic and doing ââ¬Å"work good. â⬠In all my time at Bravo Iââ¬â¢ve never performed my job carelessly. I have always been reliable, hardworking and go above and beyond my job description. Before working at Sonic I assumed that being a hard worker had more to do with my personality than the job itself, but instead I learned that wasnââ¬â¢t the case. I realized that the uplifting and welcoming environment of Bravo and knowing that they valued me as an employee motivated me to be a hard worker and to do ââ¬Å"work good,â⬠in return. However, the stressful and negative environment at Sonic made me miserable and careless about my job. Many people donââ¬â¢t see the relationship between work environment and work performance, but I have experienced it firsthand. If employers show their employees that they value them and their work, employees will only be more determined to prove themselves. You donââ¬â¢t have to know how to cook; you donââ¬â¢t have to know how to think. Thereââ¬â¢s a procedure for everything and you just follow the procedures (251),ââ¬â¢ says Jason, a former McDonalds employee that Garson interviewed for her passage. Jason explains that you donââ¬â¢t need any experience to work at McDonalds. You just follow the procedures your taught. McDonalds is run like more of a factory than a restaurant. Th ey donââ¬â¢t want people; they want robots. As Garson interviews more employees and former employees of McDonalds she realizes that Jason was absolutely right. Not only did McDonalds know that they could easily replace their employees, they made sure their employees knew this as well. If someone had an opinion or did things ââ¬Å"their own wayâ⬠they were punished rather than appreciated. McDonalds completely runs on technology. The computers do everything, including telling the managers how many employees to schedule. The amount of technology they use gives McDonalds the freedom to hire almost anyone. Even though I donââ¬â¢t think its right for McDonalds to treat their employees with such disregard, I have to say that I understand their mindset. Their business isnââ¬â¢t affected by how they treat their employees in any way, so why does it matter? Workmanââ¬â¢s job is quite different than working at a fast food restaurant such as McDonalds or Sonic. As a social worker she knows that how she does her job can have a significant impact on someone elseââ¬â¢s life. Workmanââ¬â¢s passage focuses mainly on her questions about policy: how is policy defined? How are policies established? Can there be exceptions to a policy? A social workers job is to help people better themselves, but what if a policy prevents them from doing so? There is no right answer to these questions. In her passage Workman tells the story of Dan, a social worker who broke policy by building better houses for his clients, and was fired (Workman 754). Policies are putting social workers in lose-lose situations. Itââ¬â¢s as if theyââ¬â¢re forced to choose between helping someone who truly needs it and keeping their job. Workman shares a personal experience of her own about an old Indian woman who used to support herself by selling handmade sweaters. Due to her severe arthritis the woman could no longer make sweaters and needed help making ends meet. After a few months of being on welfare the woman sold two sweaters and earned enough money to support herself for that month. According to policy Workman was supposed to take the woman off of welfare, but she didnââ¬â¢t and instead made no record of the old womanââ¬â¢s income increase. It was at that moment that Workman realizes even if she wanted to try to get the policy changed she would put the old womanââ¬â¢s welfare and her own job at stake. Workmanââ¬â¢s experience, as well as Danââ¬â¢s experience, is the perfect example of what it means to do ââ¬Å"good work. â⬠Doing ââ¬Å"good workâ⬠and doing ââ¬Å"work goodâ⬠are two different things and itââ¬â¢s not always easy to balance the two. Sometimes in order to be a good employee you have to go against something you believe is right or you must make the decision to do whatââ¬â¢s right and risk losing your job. You wouldnââ¬â¢t think the job of a McDonalds employee and a social worker would have very much in common, but they do. McDonalds employees are to follow procedures, as social workers are to follow the policies. McDonalds employees and Workman were encouraged to do ââ¬Å"work goodâ⬠and discouraged to worry about doing ââ¬Å"good workâ⬠if it affected their job. In my experience at Sonic I learned a lot about the factors that go into doing ââ¬Å"work goodâ⬠and how it feels not to be appreciated by your employer. If it wasnââ¬â¢t for my job at Bravo I might not know the difference between the two and I may not have known the feeling of being a hard, honorable worker who knew they were appreciated.
